A spokesman for the Gun Owners of America explains why the Converse County School District needs to make the safety measure happen.
At a time where school shootings happen on a regular basis, the discussion surrounding whether teachers should be armed continues to come up. Some believe it will provide a greater means of safety, while others believes it’s an unnecessary measure.
However, it’s important – especially in certain districts.
The Converse County School District #1 Board is set to vote on October 8th whether teachers in the Wyoming school should be armed. Those interested would have to submit an application, obtain approval, possess a valid conceal-carry permit, undergo a psychological evaluation and receive firearms training, of course.
The District is currently accepting in-person public comments for the vote, and many are likely to be against it for “safety” reasons. However, the ultimate goal is to allow trained and approved staff to protect students and other staff from armed threats at school. And that’s needed now more than ever before.
At least four other Wyoming school districts allow armed staff in the schools, and to positive effect. 16 other states also have some form of the program available as well, with very little negative feedback.
Sam Parades, another Gun Owners of America spokesman, is available to speak on this subject, serving as Executive Director of the Gun Owners of America.
Stephen Willeford, the 2017 “hero with a gun” who serves as the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America, is also available for interview.
Q&A:
- Why do you think so many people are opposed to having armed teachers in schools?
- Is Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry as some call it) an effective measure against “active shooter” events, you think?
- Why don’t more states (and school districts, for that matter) accept Constitutional-Carry as an effective solution?
- What would you argument be against someone opposed to an armed teacher at a school, and the thought that them having a gun would be “unsafe”?
- FOR STEPHEN: You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
- FOR STEPHEN: Where can people find your book?
- Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
