A representative from the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms explains where the focus of attention truly lies.
The nation is still reeling from a shooting that took place at a Christian school in Nashville, leading to the deaths of three children and three adults. But some have already begun saying that something should be done about banning firearms in the country. The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), however, see a different problem.
The group has noted that America has more of a mental health crisis than a firearms crisis. In a press statement, CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb explained, “Firearms don’t have a brain to hate with, or a finger to pull their own trigger.” (That’s kind of a variation of “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”)
“What happened Monday in Nashville should serve as a reminder that while the gun prohibition lobby and its allies in Congress want to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens,” Gottlieb continued. “They are perfectly happy to let people such as the perpetrator of this rampage fall through the cracks. Now it’s being reported she was under a doctor’s care for some sort of emotional disorder.”
He also criticized the background check system in the United States as well. “Bad data in, bad results out, and Joe Biden wants to keep it that way. There are thousands of people in the system who don’t belong there, while someone like Audrey Hale probably should have been. Even her parents reportedly believe she couldn’t be trusted with a firearm.”
Gottlieb also explained why most Americans prefer to own a firearm, despite others believing they can do harm. “The reason most Americans own firearms is to protect themselves against mentally unstable, violent people and evil, dangerous criminals,” he said.
A representative for the CCRKBA joins us now to discuss this situation further.
Q&A:
- When did mental health become such a staggering issue in this country? With rising health care rates? Changing conditions with inflation? Disagreement with politicians? Or is it a number of these things?
- Gottlieb believes the country is going through more of a mental health crisis than a firearm crisis. What would you say to any critics that would say otherwise and call for a ban on guns?
- Why do you believe President Biden isn’t doing more to improve the mental health in this country? Is he just afraid of being stuck with a rather gigantic medical bill for the treatments? Or is it something else?
- Gottlieb noted how better security would make a difference at some of these schools, especially after the Nashville shooting. Would putting someone with Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry) in schools be a good idea in this case? What argument would you have for someone that’s against it?
- Where can people call in to pledge their support to the CCRKBA?
- The number to support the group is (800) 699-0992.
- Where can we learn more about the and its members?
