A Game Under Fire (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

A deadly shooting during a Magic City Classic football game brings up questions about security.

Another day, another “active shooter” event. This time, it took place following a Magic City Classic college football game in Birmingham, Alabama, leaving one person dead and eight others injured. What’s worse, authorities are still investigating the incident, and no suspect has been publicly identified. This has Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford asking what could have been done to prevent it.

  • A deadly shooting has taken place at a Magic City Classic football game in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Upon the current tally, one person has been killed and eight others injured. Police are currently looking for a suspect.
  • Police report that multiple firearms have been found at the scene, indicating someone planned the attack.
  • No suspects have been found, and police have asked for support from anyone that may have video of the incident.
  • This brings up security questions, namely what could have been done to prevent the incident.

The shooting took place outside Legion Field during the game, in which the Alabama A&M University Bulldogs were taking on the Alabama State University. One person was killed, and eight others have been injured. At the moment, a suspect is still at large.

What’s worse is that, according to police, multiple firearms were located at the scene – which means the shooter could have been planning something way worse.

Police are asking for any assistance in identifying the shooter, including anyone that may have video from the incident.

What does this latest shooting say about the need for additional safety and security, especially for such a popular event?

Willeford, the 2017 “hero with a gun” from the Sutherland Springs shooting, joins us now to discuss the situation further. We welcome him to the show.

Q&A:

  1. What are your thoughts on this shooting? What concerns you about the multiple firearms recovered at the scene? Is it possible that the individual or individuals involved were planning to hurt even more people?
  2. What does this say about the alarming increase in active shooter incidents in 2026?
  3. Alabama is an open-carry and Constitutional Carry state. Do you believe more armed citizens should have been on the scene to help contain the shooter? Or would that have been difficult given the large crowd in attendance?
  4. What are the benefits of having an armed citizen present at an event like this? Can they really make all the difference in stopping a shooter who could otherwise hurt others?
  5. What about those states that currently don’t allow open carry or Constitutional Carry? Could situations like this potentially serve as a “wake-up call” for them?
  6. Where do you see the debate surrounding gun rights going as we head into the new year? Especially if Democrats gain more seats in the Senate and House of Representatives following the midterm elections?
  7. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, which discusses the 2017 shooting in Sutherland Springs and your role in helping stop the attacker. Tell us more about how the book came together and why you believe it is an important read right now.
  8. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  9. Where can we learn more about you and Gun Owners of America?
