A representative for the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms explains why private gun owners’ rights are in danger of being violated.
California lawmakers have approved anti-gun Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom’s plan to push for a 28th Amendment to dictate strict gun control measures. But gun groups – including the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) – are calling for other states to reject the measure before it can gain any traction.
Per Newsom’s proposal, the Amendment would mandate “universal background checks” on all firearm purchases, raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21 years, create a “reasonable waiting period” on gun purchases and ban the sale of modern semiautomatic firearms—the so-called “assault weapons” anti-gunners despise—in a package that would essentially destroy the Second Amendment. And that’s something that Newsom and his California government have been pushing heavily for.
CCRKBA chairman Alan Gottlieb noted in a statement, “Gavin Newsom’s proposal would effectively turn the right to keep and bear arms into a government-regulated privilege. As we just witnessed in New Mexico, an anti-gun-rights governor could use such a constitutional amendment to effectively disarm the citizenry as a ‘public health emergency’ without any recourse of legal challenge.
“We’re actually very fortunate that New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham attempted such an outrageous infringement on Second Amendment rights, just so the nation could see how extreme she, Newsom and other like-minded politicians would become if they could legally get away with it.”
He added, “Gavin Newsom and his far-left Democrat allies in and out of California want to emasculate the cornerstone amendment in our Bill of Rights.”
So what is the plan? “We are in the process of mailing millions of petitions to veto this proposed 28thAmendment and stop Newsom’s fanatical plan to shred the Constitution and our Bill of Rights. We will not sit back and wait, because there are too many billionaires out there willing to put their money behind Newsom’s crusade. So, we’re starting right now to build the public groundswell against this despicable idea.”
Joining us now is a representative of the CCRKBA to discuss the matter further.
Q&A:
- First and foremost, why do you think Newsom is pushing so hard for this 28th Amendment? Especially considering that his previous attempts at gun bans have actually resulted in moreviolence within his state?
- Do you believe some of these Governors and Senators haven’t learned a thing from Governor Grisham’s actions in New Mexico? Especially considering the adjustments that she’s has to make surrounding the controversy?
- If passed, could the 28th Amendment result in even more violence within our country, as the Second Amendment is basically picked apart?
- What do you advise members of other states to do in an effort to keep this Amendment from passing? How will the CCRKBA support them?
- Where can people call in to pledge their support to the CCRKBA?
- The number to support the group is (800) 699-0992.
- You’re also a member of the Second Amendment Foundation. Where can we learn more about the group and its members?
