The Epoch Times’ senior investigative reporter discusses the new bill, and what effect it could have on China’s efforts to overtake Taiwan.
Things are certainly heated between the United States and China at the moment, but a new bill working its way through the Senate could possibly add even more tension.
The bill is H.R. 1176, and, according to Congress, it would “amend the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI) Act of 2019 to provide that the United States, as a member of any international organizations, should oppose any attempts by the People’s Republic of China to resolve Taiwan’s status by distorting the decisions, language, policies, or procedures of the organization, and for other purposes.”
It was currently passed by the House and is making its way through the U.N. Senate. If passed, it could go to President Joe Biden’s desk for signing.
UN Resolution 2758, adopted by the United Nations in 1971, recognized the People’s Republic of China (the Chinese regime) as the only legitimate representative of China. It also notes that Taiwan is a part of China.
Based on history, however, Taiwan has never been a part of the PRC, and the U.S. military did occupy the country from 1945 to 1954. The U.S. government has never recognized that Taiwan is a part of the People’s Republic of China. As such, America could have more say than Beijing’s leaders when it comes to decide the future of Taiwan.
With that said, what does this mean for Taiwan – and, for that matter, the escalating matter between the United States and China? Joining us now to discuss this further is The Epoch Times’ senior investigative reporter Nan Su, who is an expert in all things China-related. We welcome him to discuss this matter further.
Q&A:
- First, let’s talk H.R. 1176. Do you believe Congress and the Senate are trying to move this forward as a way to try and temper the growing concerns over China and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)?
- If passed, would this allow the United States to provide additional protection to Taiwan? Or will China still attempt to try and take it over somehow?
- Let’s talk a little bit about UN Resolution 2758. Why do you think the U.N. believes that Taiwan is a part of China, even though history tells a different story?
- Could this have something to do with the U.N. Assembly coming together in mid-September? Are they trying to find a certain advantage with China, or is it something else?
- You noted an interesting example of how Korea relates, between how North and South Korea are divided. Elaborate more on this example, and how it ties in with this particular bill.
- What do you think will happen between China and the United States in the months ahead? Could we be looking at the possibility of war?
- Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final War. Tell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
- Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
