The United States Just Issued a Travel Warning To China, Mainly Due To the Possibility of “Wrongful Detention” (Guest: Nan Su)

The Epoch Times’ investigative reporter Nan Su discusses the controversial announcement, and why the U.S. had to make it.

At a time when there appears to be heavy friction with China, the United States just issued an announcement advising people not to travel there.

Per this report from The Epoch Times, U.S. government has warned Americans about traveling to the country, mainly due to the “arbitrary enforcement of laws by the Chinese communist regime” that could very well result in people being jailed – even when they’re not told specifically what their crimes are.

“The People’s Republic of China (PRC) government arbitrarily enforces local laws, including issuing exit bans on U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries, without fair and transparent process under the law,” a June 30 travel advisory issued by the U.S. State Department said. “U.S. citizens traveling or residing in the PRC may be detained without access to U.S. consular services or information about their alleged crime.”

As a result, they’ve told citizens to “reconsider travel” to another country, at least for the time being.

We’ve seen a number of cases with arrests and even sentencing of U.S. citizens. For example, a 78-year old named John Shing-Wan Leung has been wrongfully sentenced to life in prison for spying charges. And another U.S. citizen, Lee Meng-Chu, was recently freed for similar charges after being jailed back in 2019.

Is China going too far with such charges, possibly as retaliation for the United States’ actions against the CCP? Joining us now to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. His knowledge in all things China make him an ideal person to discuss this particular topic.

Q&A:

  1. Do you believe China is going too far with charging U.S. citizens with spying, or even incarcerating them without providing details on what they’re being charged with?
  2. Is this just the latest example of the Chinese Communist Party’s outreach, and Xi Jinping’s growing actions against the United States?
  3. What do you think prompted the U.S. government to tell its citizens to not visit China at this time? Is it merely out of precaution?
  4. Do you believe China may go after more U.S. citizens as a result, and jail them without even providing them with details of what they’re being charged with?
  5. How bad do you believe the friction will be between the U.S. and China in the months ahead? Could this potentially lead to war if tempers don’t stop flaring?
  6. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  7. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
