College Cops Killed by Active Shooter Guest: Michael Letts

Biden’s first year in office saw 73 police officers killed — most deaths since 1995

Interview guest Michael Letts, Columbia, SC

Bridgewater College Police Department (BCPD) Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer Vashon “J.J.” Jefferson, known as the ‘dynamic duo’, were murdered in the line of duty on February 1st while responding a report of a suspicious person. The tragic murder of these two beloved officers is only the most recent example of an alarming trend – a sharp uptick in deaths of officers intentionally killed in the line of duty.

More cops were killed in the line of duty during President Biden’s first year of office than any other year since 1995 — and a law-enforcement group says the driving force is the growing anti-cop sentiment, according to a new report.

Seventy-three officers were intentionally killed in the line of duty in 2021 — a nearly 59 percent increase over 2020, when 46 cops were murdered, Fox News reported Sunday, citing the FBI’s database on officers killed in action.

In a message on the school’s Facebook page, College President David Bushman called the shootings an “unspeakable tragedy.”

“Campus Police Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer JJ Jefferson were shot and killed on campus while protecting us,” Bushman wrote. “These officers were close friends, known to many of us as the ‘dynamic duo.’ John was J.J.’s best man at his wedding this year. They were beloved by students, faculty, and staff. I hurt for their families and loved ones, as I know we all do.”

Here to discuss this topic and more, Special Guest Michael Letts, a police officer and founder of InVest USA, a charity providing bulletproof vests to police officers.

Suggested Talking Points:

  1. How did events unfold in the shooting deaths of Bridgewater College Police Department (BCPD) Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer Vashon “J.J.” Jefferson?

Answer: They were dispatched to the area after school employees noticed a suspicious male carrying a duffel bag on campus, according to CNN. During a brief interaction with suspect Alexander Campbell, the 27-year-old fatally shot both officers,

  1. What do you think could have caused the increase in intentional officer killings?

Answer: The dramatic increase in hate speech and insults hurled at law enforcement daily, along with the Defund the Police/ BLM/ ANTIFA movements, have placed targets on the backs of officers all across the country. The coordinated and concerted effort by liberal, socialist, democratic politicians are destroying the thin blue line in America.

  1.  Could this have turned out differently?

Answer: Funding the necessary equipment, along with a strong DA/ Prosecutor’s Office, would have made a difference.

  1. What Tactical gear may have aided in this situation?

Answer: Active Shooter vests and helmet gear would have had a significant impact from preventing injury to changing perception and presence.

  1. If more gun control is not the answer, what is the answer?

Answer: For starters, we need to honor the Second Amendment provided by our founding fathers for our protection and regularly let police officers and other first responders know how much they are needed and appreciated. Their morale has been low in this Defund the Police era. But, they are people, too, and they appreciate the encouragement and appreciation. And speak out against the Defund the Police movement. This sort of demonization of cops foments more murders of police officers.

6) What can communities do to help stem the rise in violence and support our thin blue line?

Answer: Visit www.investusa.org to see how to help get active shooter vests to police who need them for protection. The vast majority of communities either do not provide active-shooter vests to their officers, or they issue vests that are not strong enough against modern firepower on the streets
