Journalist on J6 “Pipe Bomb Patsy”

Pipe Fiction: Fake Bombs, a Phantom Bomber, an Inconvenient Suspect, and an Autistic J6 “Pipe Bomb Patsy”

For nearly five years, two pipe bombs planted outside the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters remained one of the most baffling mysteries surrounding January 6. Now, with Brian Cole Jr. indicted and facing a February trial, investigative journalist Alex Newman, of the Liberty Journal, can examine whether the government finally solved the mystery, or simply found a suspect.

  • Five years passed before anyone was arrested for the J6 pipe bombs
  • Gait analysis initially pointed investigators toward a different suspect; Cole nabbed very soon thereafter
  • Brian Cole Jr. faces trial despite disputed physical evidence
  • Cole’s alleged confession raises questions about his interrogation
  • Unsealed records could expose major flaws in the J6 pipe bomb investigation

The devices were planted on the evening of January 5, 2021, within blocks of the U.S. Capitol the night before J6, yet the person caught on surveillance video remained unidentified despite a massive FBI investigation involving more than 50 agents. The bombs were discovered the following afternoon, diverting law-enforcement resources at a critical moment as the Capitol was being breached.

Then, in November 2025, just weeks before Cole’s arrest, Blaze Media published an explosive investigation claiming gait analysis identified former Capitol Police officer Shauni Kerkhoff as a 94% match to the pipe-bomb suspect, with the analyst putting the match as high as 98%. The report generated enormous controversy over the J6 bombs, was later retracted, and resulted in a defamation lawsuit, but the episode raised a fundamental question: Why had an independent media investigation seemingly produced a specific suspect after the FBI had spent years coming up empty?

Days later, the FBI arrested Cole, a 30-year-old Virginia man for the J6 pipe bombs. Prosecutors say cellphone-location evidence, surveillance, purchases of bomb-making components and Cole’s statements establish that he was the person who planted the devices. Cole initially denied involvement during questioning but eventually made statements prosecutors characterize as a confession. He has pleaded not guilty.

Yet the case has hardly settled the controversy. Cole is autistic, and newly released interrogation material has prompted questions about how investigators obtained his statements and whether his responses constituted a reliable confession. Blaze’s own later reporting has also highlighted stark differences between Cole’s gait, posture, physical characteristics and mannerisms and those of the hooded figure captured on the original surveillance footage.

Newman can dissect the evidence on both sides before the February 16 trial: What did the FBI know during those five missing years? Why did the investigation suddenly produce an arrest in December 2025? How should the public evaluate conflicting forensic and video evidence? And does the Cole case finally resolve the J6 pipe-bomb mystery—or raise an even bigger one about how the investigation was conducted?

With the trial approaching, the question is no longer simply “Who planted the bombs?” It is whether Americans can be confident they know who did.
