The ancient Altar of Pergamon was built in what is now Turkey and dedicated to Zeus. Pergamon is the city described in Revelation as the place “where Satan’s throne is.” The altar was dismantled in antiquity, but its surviving reliefs and architectural elements were excavated centuries later and taken to Berlin in the late 19th century. The original foundation remains at the Pergamon archaeological site in Turkey, while the famous reconstructed altar—with many of its original sculptural elements—is housed in Berlin’s Pergamon Museum.
Soon after Obama’s election, the Pergamon Museum hosted the “Return of the Gods,” beginning in November of 2008.
That creates a provocative question at the heart of Cahn’s argument: If the altar associated with Pergamon’s “Throne of Satan” was transferred from Turkey to Berlin, did the symbolism surrounding that throne effectively move into the heart of Europe? And what happened in Berlin nearly a century later?
The timing is striking.
In July 2008, while campaigning for president, Obama traveled to Berlin and delivered his now-famous speech before hundreds of thousands of people. Cahn points to the location: the Tiergarten, near the area where the Altar of Pergamon had been concealed in a bunker during World War II. Obama invoked Berlin’s Cold War history, the threat of nuclear destruction, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the breaking down of barriers around the world, ultimately calling for people to “stand as one.”
Then, only weeks later, Obama accepted the Democratic presidential nomination beneath a massive architectural structure that Cahn argues bore remarkable similarities to the Altar of Pergamon—columns, proportions, rectangular structures and a prominent stairway configuration.
Cahn sees the sequence as more than an unusual coincidence: the altar’s ancient journey from Turkey to Berlin; Obama’s arrival in Berlin at a pivotal moment in his presidential campaign; and an altar-like structure appearing behind him just weeks before he became the Democratic nominee.
Cahn also examines Obama’s appearance beneath the Victory Column in Berlin, topped by Victoria, the Roman counterpart of the Greek goddess Nike, as another element in what he describes as a larger pattern involving pagan symbolism and the dechristianization of the West.
Now, with the 2026 midterms approaching, Cahn asks whether the political and cultural transformation he associates with Obama’s rise has truly ended—or whether its influence is still shaping American politics.
