Netanyahu’s Headline Fight

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to sue a newspaper over untrue Hamas comments.

It seems that the criticism against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to grow. But this time around, he’s fighting a particular claim made by an Israeli newspaper – and it’s the right move, according to former Mayor of Shiloh David Rubin, Founder and President of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund.

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s lawyers are proceeding with defamation proceedings against Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
  • The publication indicates that Netanyahu had been warned about the Hamas attacks that took place on October 7, 2023 several days prior, in a phone call with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
  • Netanyahu called the report a “sinister plot,” and the newspaper has shown a history of being critical of the Prime Minister.

According to the BBC, Netanyahu told his lawyers to begin defamation proceedings against an Israeli newspaper called Haaretz, who published a story regarding the Prime Minister knowing about the Hamas attacks that took place back in October 2023 just a few days prior.

The newspaper noted that UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had a phone call with Netanyahu back in September, and during that time, he received a warning about then-Hamas chief in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, planning some sort of strike.

Prior to his lawyers being contacted, Netanyahu’s office noted that “no warning was given to the Prime Minister from the United Arab Emirates” about the attack, and the report was nothing more than a part of a “sinister plot” against him.

Haaretz has stood by the report, claiming that its “sole purpose is to silence journalistic criticism.” However, it has been known to criticize Netanyahu in the past. And this could be part of its planning to take some traction off Netanyahu as a general election campaign approaches later this year for Israel.

Rubin joins us now to discuss this situation further. Welcome, Mayor Rubin!

Q&A:

  1. What purpose do you believe Haaretz is serving by publishing such a report? Is it really trying to take momentum away from Netanyahu? Or is it simply taking another dig at him, as it’s done in the past?
  2. Netanyahu has called the report a “sinister plot.” Do you believe that characterization is justified?
  3. Are you familiar with Haaretz’s work from the past? Do they go overboard when it comes to their reports against Netanyahu?
  4. What do you think should happen with the legal case? Should Haaretz be required to apologize and retract what Netanyahu’s lawyers characterize as defamatory claims?
  5. What kind of effect could this report have on Netanyahu’s re-election?
  6. Tell us more about your work with the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund and how it can help those in need.
