There is little dispute about what happened: Clancy admitted to strangling her three children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan—in their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023 before attempting suicide by cutting herself and jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed. Her defense argued that postpartum psychosis and an extensive regimen of psychiatric medications rendered her incapable of criminal responsibility. The trial ended in a mistrial after 11 jurors reportedly favored an insanity verdict while one juror remained opposed.
Harden sees something larger than a courtroom controversy. At the core of parenthood, he argues, is selflessness—a willingness to place the welfare of one’s children above one’s own suffering, circumstances and desires. That principle, he says, is inseparable from a strong faith in God and the recognition that children are not possessions, burdens or extensions of their parents, but vulnerable human beings entrusted to their care.
The case also raises serious questions about America’s approach to mental health. Clancy had sought professional treatment and was prescribed numerous psychiatric medications before the killings. Her defense argued that she had been overmedicated and that the drugs contributed to her deteriorating mental state. Harden argues that Americans should ask whether an increasingly pharmaceutical approach to mental distress is actually addressing the underlying problem—or sometimes making an already fragile situation more dangerous.
For Harden, the Clancy case is another asterisk in the American history books: another moment when compassion for an adult risks eclipsing responsibility toward children. The central question is not whether mental illness deserves compassion. It does. The question is whether compassion can coexist with accountability—and whether society has forgotten that the first responsibility of a parent is the safety and welfare of the child.
