Spark in the Dark: Child Subjected to Trauma and Psychological Experimentation became a Warrior
Child sex trafficking has gotten increased and much warranted attention over the last several years. Juliette Engel was such victim and incredible survivor, available for media interviews to discuss her haunting and deeply controversial memoir, Sparky: Surviving Sex Magick, the story of a child who claims she survived one of the darkest alleged abuses of Cold War America: government-sanctioned mind-control experimentation, ritualized abuse, and systematic psychological fragmentation under the CIA-linked Monarch program.
Part literary memoir, part psychological survival narrative, Sparky reads like a fusion of Southern Gothic, espionage thriller, and trauma testimony — except Engel insists every word is true. At its core is the unforgettable story of a six-year-old girl sold into a world she could not comprehend, who created a warrior alter ego named “Sparky” in order to survive what no child should ever endure.

- Claims CIA-linked Monarch program exploited vulnerable American children.
- Created “Sparky” persona to psychologically survive ritualized abuse.
- Escaped alleged captivity at seventeen and rebuilt her life.
- Founded Moscow underground railroad rescuing trafficking victims from former USSR.
- Memoir explores trauma, dissociation, memory recovery, and survival resilience.
According to Engel, her childhood became a maze of manufactured identities, relocations, and erased memories as her family moved from place to place to evade authorities. By age ten, she says she had been deliberately fractured into multiple personalities, each attached to different locations and experiences. In the rough border town atmosphere of Imperial Beach, California, near Tijuana, she encountered the fictional Scottish girl “Sparky MacGregor,” a character who became her psychological lifeline and symbol of resistance. Sparky taught her not merely how to endure fear, but how to fight it.
Child Sex Trafficking Very Hard to Escape
What makes Engel’s story especially compelling is not only the darkness of the allegations, but the extraordinary life that followed. After escaping a camp in Big Sur at seventeen, Engel rebuilt herself completely. She became a physician, raised a family, and later founded an underground railroad in Moscow to rescue child trafficking victims from the former Soviet Union. Decades later, while speaking at an international border security conference at Imperial Beach, suppressed memories of her childhood abruptly resurfaced, bringing her face-to-face once more with the persona that had once saved her life.
Engel can discuss trauma, memory recovery, dissociation, survival psychology, child trafficking, intelligence-community conspiracies, and the power of storytelling to transform horror into testimony. Sparky is ultimately not just about abuse, but about resilience, identity, and a promise made by a frightened child to someday tell “our terrible story, making it beautiful.”
