The former Mayor of Shiloh discusses the increase in attacks on Israelis – and if it should be a cause for concern.
Though talks are ongoing with Iran in an effort to find peace with Israel, some are taking their attacks against them to a new medium – online.
A report from Times of Israel revealed that Iranian cyberattacks against Israelis – namely senior government and defense officials, along with journalists and teachers – have increased since June. So far, many of these attacks have been foiled, but, in all likelihood, they could continue.
“The purpose of these attempts is to collect personal and professional information that could be used to advance terrorist activity, espionage, and influence operations in the form of ‘targeted phishing,’” the Shin Bet and National Cyber Directorate said in a joint statement.
These hacks include “personalized approaches tailored to the target’s field of interest,” as well as impersonation of certain higher-ups, attempting to gain access to password and verification codes.
With that, the agencies recommended to Israelis that they boost their cybersecurity measures, including two-step verification and a recovery email system. They should also watch their emails very carefully for spam.
Is there a possibility that Iranians could continue boosting attacks such as these, even if some sort of deal is manageable in the real world?
Joining us now to discuss this situation further is former Mayor of Shiloh David Rubin, who currently serves as the founder and President of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund. Welcome, Mayor Rubin.
Q&A:
- Should we be surprised that Iranians are trying to go after Israelis with cyberattacks? They seem to be picking up in popularity when it comes to being a new kind of warfare.
- Should there be concern over these cyberattacks? Is it possible Iranians could get necessary information for future terrorist attacks?
- Will these cyberattacks likely continue even if some sort of deal is reached between the U.S. and Iran? Could they possibly increase as a result of said deal?
- Have you had any personal experience dealing with such cyberattacks? Is there anything you can recommend for Israelis to do to prevent being affected?
- Where do you see the situation between Israel and Iran going in the months ahead? And, for that matter, what about the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Hamas?
