The Gun Owners of America spokesman talks about what’s happening in Virginia, and why it could be asking for trouble with the Second Amendment.
The Second Amendment of the Constitution allows citizens the right to bear arms. However, some states feel that it stands for nothing, as they continue to make restrictive gun laws that could cost people a great deal of money.
Take what’s happened in Virginia this week. House Democrats just pushed a package of gun control legislation past voting, thanks to their majority. With that, the proposals are now headed to the Senate, and could cost private gun owners dearly.
With these bills, there could be an outright ban of selling assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. In addition, unfair age restrictions could also be placed on certain kinds of firearms, including handguns and shotguns.
If signed into law, anyone living in Virginia could face an uphill struggle even owning or attempting to purchase a firearm – including fines and jail times.
Mitchell Tyler, who owns a gun shop in Roanoke, made it clear that passing these bills could be problematic. “To completely make them unavailable for Virginians to purchase, that takes away Virginians’ rights to self-defense, to sporting, to investment and ownership, and it limits people’s rights when they have done nothing wrong.”
Does Virginia really have the right to do this? And for that matter, can the Second Amendment provide any kind of protection?
Joining us to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, the 2017 “hero with a gun” who serves as spokesman for the Gun Owners of America, a group that firmly believes in everyone’s right to bear arms. We welcome him to the show.
Q&A:
- What are your thoughts on the anti-gun bills making their way through Virginia right now? Is it bad how quickly House Democrats are trying to get them passed?
- If passed, how problematic could it be for anyone to purchase firearms, let alone own them, without facing some possibility of fines or even jail time?
- What about the bill suggesting that anyone under 21 would be unable to purchase a firearm?
- Is there anything the Second Amendment could do to protect people from bills such as this? For that matter, could Trump’s newly developed Civil Rights office proceed with a lawsuit of some kind?
- Why do states continue to set up gun laws in defiance of the Second Amendment? And, for that matter, the Bruen decision by the Supreme Court a while back?
