The former Mayor of Shiloh discusses the opening, and why Hamas should use it as a point of exit.
After years of conflict, Gaza’s Rafah Crossing is preparing to open to pedestrians.
Following test runs over the weekend, Israel is set to open the crossing with Egypt on Monday, as part of a rebuilding of the Palestinian territory’s sole gateway with the rest of the world.
This comes following the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. However, it has limitations. Only Palestinians traveling on foot will be allowed to enter and exit, so vehicles bringing aid will not be allowed into Gaza.
And the list to travel is very exclusive, as Israel has made it clear that only those whose names have been approved in advance will be allowed to cross in both directions. Egypt is planning to adopt a similar system.
Will it ever open wider? Former Mayor of Shiloh David Rubin believes it should be used for one sole purpose. “For a lasting peace, an open Rafah border crossing should be a one-way exit for every member and supporter of Hamas, with no right of return.”
Rubin joins us now to discuss this opening further, and what comes next. Welcome, Mayor Rubin.
Q&A:
- What are your thoughts on the Rafah Crossing reopening after all this time?
- Does it make sense for both Israel and Egypt to limit who can cross both ways on Rafah’s Crossing? Is there a chance it could open wider, or it remain limited?
- You’ve noted that Hamas should use the Crossing to leave Israel and never return. Do you truly believe this could bring peace?
- How long do you believe the ceasefire will last? Will it truly hold? Or will the Crossing be forced to close up again with the return of conflict?
- Where do you see the situation in Israel going as the year proceeds, especially with word that Iran may be opening testing facilities again?
