Gun Owners of America Suing the USPS

A spokesman for the group explains why an important lawsuit has been filed surrounding the mailing of firearms.

Mailing firearms may not sound like a big deal, especially considering collectors usually order them this way for collecting purposes. But a long-standing law has been a thorn in their side – prompting a new legal action to be put in place.

The Gun Owners of America (GOA), working alongside the Gun Owners Foundation (GOF) recently filed a lawsuit against the United States Postal Service. With it, they hope to do away with the Prohibition-era federal ban on the mailing of handguns.

The official complaint notes that the ban is “inconsistent with Founding-era historical tradition” of firearm regulations, and has been this way since all the way back to 1927. Clearly, times have changed since then, with many requiring firearms in an effort to keep safe. And some simply don’t have the convenience of visiting a shop and picking one up.

And it’s irony, considering that the USPS usually handles handgun shipments on behalf of businesses and government officials without blinking an eye. Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

Erich Pratt, Senior Vice President of Gun Owners of America, noted, “This complaint demonstrates that the federal government’s Prohibition-era ban on mailing handguns violates the Second Amendment.  GOA is proud to stand with its members and supporters to ensure that their constitutional rights are protected, and we are committed to ending all anti-gun ‘rules for me, but not for thee,’ in any form they may take.”

A spokesman for the group – either Mark Jones or Stephen Willeford – joins us now to discuss the lawsuit further. We welcome them to the show!

Q&A:

  1. Why do you believe a ban on mailing firearms was put in place to begin with? Was the government really concerned about who was receiving guns this way?
  2. It’s strange that the policy is in place for general mailing, and yet the USPS allows these firearms to be mailed to businesses and government officials. Why the exceptions?
  3. What are your hopes with this lawsuit? To get the law knocked down completely? Or at least be modified so that it’s “more fair” for gun collectors?
  4. Do you believe that the USPS – and for that matter, certain Democrats – will have objections to the lawsuit?
  5. Where do you see the fight surrounding gun rights going as 2025 continues onward?
  6. Gun Owners of America is hosting an event this year called GOALS 2025. Tell us more about it.
  7. FOR STEPHEN: You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  8. FOR STEPHEN: Where can people find your book?
