The law enforcement veteran and InVest USA founder discusses a new report where officers are literally under attack – and nothing is being done about it.
When did police officers become the enemy?
A new report from Fox News, through information from the FBI, revealed that assaults on U.S. law enforcement officers have reached a 10-year high through 2023, with over 79,000 attacks. And they show no signs of slowing down, especially after the deadly ambush of a 23-year old police officer in Euclid, Ohio over the weekend.
The report also notes that, though only sixty officers were killed last year, there were more officers killed between 2021 and 2023, more than any other three-year period to date.
So what’s the reasoning behind this? Joe Gamaldi, who serves as vice president of the National Fraternal Order of Police, discussed the findings. “There is no question that there is a war on cops in this country. There were 378 police officers shot last year. That is a record number since we started tracking the data in 2018. Shootings of police officers have increased by 60%.”
Former FBI Special Agent Nicole Parker added, “Particularly since the summer of 2020, in many cities, there has been a general demonization and disrespect for law enforcement – trust and respect for law enforcement has recently deteriorated.
Gamaldi also added that “politicians, media, grifters and activists who realized they could make money and garner influence by demonizing police officers [have] led to police officers being disrespected, delegitimized and treated like scum in this country for a better part of this decade.”
Joining us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is President, Founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His experience in all things law and order make him a great subject for this interview. Welcome, Michael!
Q&A:
- What are your thoughts on the findings of this report? What would you say is the most shocking statistic to come from it?
- Do you really think that a lot of people out there have “demonized” law enforcement for the wrong reasons? Mainly due to the “defund the police” campaign?
- Why do you think certain politicians and media types are treating officers like “scum”? Are they simply an easy target, or is there a deeper motivation behind this?
- What do you think is the reason that President Biden hasn’t made any movement on the “Protect and Serve” Act that would make it a federal crime to knowingly assault a police officer?
- For that matter, why hasn’t Biden and his fellow Democrats made any movement on providing proper funding to police officers?
- Where do you see police going in the months ahead? Will they play a part in the Presidential Election as far as discussion is concerned? Could enough negativity against the police affect President Biden’s re-election campaign?
- You’re the creator of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. Tell us more about that, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
