A spokesman for the group explains why it’s so important to battle the state’s restrictive gun laws.
The Second Amendment Foundation isn’t about to back down from Illinois’ unfair ban on so-called “assault weapons” and “large-capacity magazines.”
The group recently filed a response brief on top of its lawsuit against the ban, hoping to have the U.S. Supreme Court grant certiorari on the case.
“The Supreme Court has previously recognized the importance of providing guidance on recurring issues impacting constitutional rights,” noted SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “As we note in our brief, there is no reason for this issue to ‘percolate’ any longer, and further delaying a decision on such a fundamental rights issue simply prolongs the depravation of those rights all over the country.”
“Millions of peaceable Americans own modern semiautomatic rifles and standard-capacity magazines,” added SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut. “Millions more should have the same rights, but for bans such as the one being challenged in this case. Such rifles and magazines are commonly-owned by citizens in other states, and by granting certiorari, the high court will recognize the important constitutional question at hand, and provide an answer.”

Q&A:
- Why is Illinois so determined to ban “assault weapons” and “large-capacity magazines” in the first place? Are they really that concerned about violence?
- Haven’t similar laws in the past proven ineffective, since most people are still able to get their hands on such weapons anyway?
- You’ve noted how Concealed-Carry would be a much more viable solution to the ongoing violence in this country. What would you say is most effective about it? What argument would you have for someone that would state it just puts “more guns on the street”?
- Regarding this particular brief, do you believe the Supreme Court will finally hear the case? Could we see similar results like what happened when they overturned New York’s restrictive gun laws?
- Even if Illinois somehow loses this case and has to overturn the bans, is it possible they could come back with even more restrictive gun laws, as New York has?
