Guest Expert: David Rubin, Former Mayor of Shiloh, Israel & Founder of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund
Optional Introduction for Hosts:
In the midst of heated debates and the swirling dust of diplomatic kerfuffles, the aftermath of conflict in the Middle East often sees the overlooked victims: the children. Enter David Rubin, former mayor of Shiloh, Israel – a man who refuses to let the discourse drown out the silent cries of the youngest affected. Founder of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund, Rubin dedicates his life to healing the scars of terrorism on children. Today, we dive into the heart of these efforts and the broader canvas of Israel’s current challenges, as well as potential solutions that are as complex as they are contentious.
Optional Q&A:
Can you give us a brief overview of the current situation in Gaza and Israel’s position in it?
“Certainly. The ongoing tension and conflict in Gaza have escalated, bringing devastating impacts on both sides. Israel’s primary stance, amid these challenges, is securing its citizens against relentless threats, striving for a peace that ensures safety and sovereignty.”
What is the international community’s role in the Israel-Palestine conflict, especially with the Biden administration’s proposals?
“The international community, including the Biden administration, often tries to mediate, suggesting various solutions like multinational forces or aid. However, the effectiveness of these proposals is contingent on a deep understanding and respect for the region’s complexities and Israel’s security needs.”
How do you view the U.S.’s stance on funding for Gaza’s post-war stabilization?
“It’s a gesture that’s seemingly noble but fraught with naivety at least or malice at most. Funding without stringent safeguards and clear, Israel-aligned objectives could inadvertently fuel further unrest or empower those with malign intentions against Israel.”
What are the main challenges in implementing a two-state solution?
“The United States has no more right to demand a two-state solution in Israel as Mexico has to demand the US give Florida to Cuba. And the entire country of Israel is already significantly smaller than Florida.”
How does the situation in Gaza affect children, and what is being done to support them?
“Children bear the brunt of the trauma in these conflicts, facing fear, loss, and disruption. Through organizations like the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund, efforts are concentrated on providing therapeutic, educational, and recreational support to heal their deep-seated traumas.”
What lessons have you learned from your time as Mayor of Shiloh that you apply to your work with the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund?
“Leadership during crisis requires a balance of strength and compassion. My experience has taught me the importance of building resilience in communities, especially among children, fostering hope and healing in the face of adversity.”
How does the international narrative around the Israel-Palestine conflict impact your work and the children you support?
“The oversimplified and often biased international narrative complicates our work, overshadowing the nuanced realities on the ground and the genuine human needs we address. It requires us to also fight misinformation and advocate for a clearer understanding of the conflict’s impact on children.”
Tell us about Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund.
“Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund is dedicated to easing the trauma of children who have been victims of terrorism. Through therapeutic, educational, and recreational programs, we strive to restore a sense of normalcy and joy to their lives, rebuilding the heart of Israel one child at a time.”
