The Times Square Shooting Incident Just Took Away New York Officials’ “Sensitive Area” Gun Ban Argument

A Second Amendment Foundation spokesman explains why Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul no longer have a leg to stand on.

In the face of a Times Square shooting that left a female shopper wounded (with the suspect being arrested hours later), the idea of New York’s “sensitive area” gun ban to prevent violent crime has now come into serious question.

Despite the law being in place, the suspect had no problem firing a gun at others – doing away with any argument from Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul that a gun ban is the best resolution.

“So much for New York City’s ‘sensitive area’ blanket designation, which leaves honest citizens and merchants helpless in Times Square, and anywhere else such laws are in place,” said CCRKBA (Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms) Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “The problem in New York is that not all of the dangerous people are on the streets committing crime. Some of the danger is found in Albany, and in city hall, among people who write laws that leave honest citizens defenseless against criminal attack.

“You can’t get a license to keep a gun in a business located in a sensitive area, and even if you have a concealed carry license, you can’t legally carry a gun in Times Square or any other designated sensitive area,” he noted.

To add further to that, Gottlieb said, “Aside from the likelihood the perpetrator of the Times Square shooting is a juvenile who couldn’t legally carry a gun in the first place, the entire incident underscores what is wrong with restrictive gun control laws in New York and everywhere else. These laws only penalize and restrict law-abiding citizens, while criminals flagrantly ignore them. The rest of us understand this. We’re wondering why the politicians haven’t figured it out after all this time.”

So what is the proper solution then? A representative for the CCRKBA (and the Second Amendment Foundation) joins us now to discuss it further.

Q&A:

  1. Why is New York so dedicated to putting gun bans in place instead of rules that would actually make an impact on crime? Such as, for instance, hiring more police officers?
  2. It seems that “gun ban” is the most likely solution being considered by many politicians, including President Joe Biden. But wouldn’t criminals just be able to get their hands on the weapons a different way anyway?
  3. You’ve noted in the past that a Concealed-Carry citizen (or Constitutional-Carry, as some call it) would be a proper solution for a potential “active shooter” event. Why do you think this is the case?
  4. Why aren’t more politicians utilizing said solution? Are they simply concerned with “more guns being on the street”?
  5. What can New York do in an effort to bring down crime?
  6. Where can people call in to pledge their support to the CCRKBA?
    1. The number to support the group is (800) 699-0992.
  7. Where can we learn more about the CCRKBA and its members?
