Investigative journalist and radio host Steve Gruber discusses his latest documentary, and why people should be paying closer attention.
The impact of COVID hit a number of businesses hard over the past few years. But, surprisingly enough, it left a bigger impact on hospitals than some may expect.
In the new documentary Flatline: America’s Hospital Crisis, which is now available on Epoch TV, investigative journalist, TV broadcaster and radio host Steve Gruber takes a look at the alarming state of hospitals these days, and digs into why more than 600 rural hospitals – nearly 30 percent of those nationwide – run the risk of closing due to financial distress.
The documentary “reveals the devastating situation of the hospital closures across the country, examining the root causes and the major players of this health care epidemic and its impact on the local communities,” according to the film’s official page.
The impact of hospitals closing is a huge one, as “people do not just lose the ability to access critical health care,” but “the ripple effects reach far and wide, with many people losing jobs and local communities left in disarray.” As a result, the film’s description reads, “life expectancy goes down while unemployment, crime, poverty and death rates soar.”
Gruber joins us now to discuss the documentary, and what people can potentially do about it.

- First off, what motivated you to make Flatline: America’s Hospital Crisis? Was there a particular case that made you dig deeper into what’s happening with hospitals? Or was it something else?
- Did the COVID epidemic play a part in making these hospitals lose money? Or is it something else within the world of health care?
- Do city governments play a hand in this at all, possibly not lending the money needed to keep these hospitals open? Or is there something else we’re not seeing here?
- What impact would a closed hospital have on a community? Could it really lead to a loss of morale and lessened life expectancy?
