The federal not only doesn’t care about the security of the southern U.S. border, it is actively trying to open it up so there is no way Customs and Border Patrol agents or state law enforcement officers can stop the inflow of millions of illegal immigrants.
It is an abdication of the government’s duty to protect the sovereignty of the country and its citizens. Things have gotten so bad that even liberal politicians like New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Democrat citizens are having to admit there is a problem.
The southern border states like New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas have been particularly hard hit. Texas has tried to step up and protect its border with Mexico. However, the federal government doesn’t want that. It has not only sued Texas over barriers it erected to deter illegal immigrants, it threatened to taken them down.
Texas then sued the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies, arguing that the Lone Star State has “the sovereign right to construct border barriers to prevent the entry of illegal aliens.”
This seems simple. If the federal government doesn’t want to do its do, and a state government is willing to step up and incur the expense of doing it, allow it to happen. It would even give the Biden Administration plausible deniability during an election cycle. Officials could tell leftists that they tried to open the border, but Texas also has control of its border. Then they could tell the rest of the country that something was actually done to reduce the flood of illegals.
Luckily, a federal judge issued an order temporarily blocking the Biden Administration from using federal agents to cut through razor wire barriers that Texas had been erected on the southern border.
Sadly, the order is only temporary and will expire on Nov. 13. It also has an exception for medical emergencies. A hearing on the case is scheduled for Nov. 7.
It is another baby step forward. In September, the Biden Administration sued Texas over floating barriers the state placed in the Rio Grande. In this case, a district judge ordered the state to remove the barriers, but an appeals court ruled two days later that the state could keep them in place while the case is in the courts.
What is actually a little trickier is Texas’ dispute with New Mexico over 18 miles of razor wire along the border of the two states. Texas’ position is that illegals cross into New Mexico, which is a liberal state, but they cross into Texas to get the services available in nearby El Paso.
Again, Texas’ position is that it is protecting itself from illegals who are welcomed in New Mexico. The barrier isn’t along the entire shared border, just an area that is frequented by illegals. New Mexico’s position is that it unconstitutional because it hinders interstate commerce.
Currently, the Attorney General’s Office hasn’t taken action other than complain about “the heavy handed approach adopted by the State of Texas”, but the statement the office issued also notes the state is not impeding interstate commerce.
The answer is simple, although the Biden Administration won’t admit it. If the federal government would simply do its job, protect the border, and enforce immigration law, Texas wouldn’t be erecting borders to protect itself. However, Texans aren’t going to allow their state to be destroyed without doing their best to stop it.
