Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than Building 7. It was not struck by an aircraft, yet the 47-story structure collapsed later that afternoon in a remarkably symmetrical free-fall-like descent. For years, questioning the official explanation was treated as the province of conspiracy theorists. Today, however, serious engineers, architects and researchers continue debating whether fire alone adequately explains the building’s collapse.
There are equally compelling questions surrounding the World Trade Center towers themselves, including the enormous cost of retrofitting the buildings and what was known about their vulnerabilities before September 11. Gaffney can examine the financial, structural and technological issues surrounding the towers and explain why some of those questions deserve renewed scrutiny.
The anniversary also arrives amid renewed interest in Howard Lutnick, then CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, whose offices occupied the North Tower. Lutnick survived the attacks because he was taking his son to his first day of kindergarten, while 658 Cantor Fitzgerald employees were killed. Lutnick is now Donald Trump’s Commerce Secretary. His past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, whom Lutnick has acknowledged as a former next-door neighbor and friend, adds another contemporary dimension to the discussion.
