A Quebec physicians’ group has advocated allowing doctors to euthanize newborn babies suffering from severe disabilities, malformations, or conditions involving extreme pain. While proponents frame the idea as compassion and medical care, Harden argues that Americans should recognize the terrifying progression: abortion in the first trimester, abortion in the second trimester, abortion in the third trimester—and potentially the intentional killing of a child after birth.
What, Harden asks, fundamentally changes about the value of that child’s life during the moments between being inside and outside the birth canal?
For decades, abortion advocates have insisted that viability, dependency, disability, parental circumstances, and subjective judgments about “quality of life” can justify ending a preborn child’s life. But if those same factors can also be used to justify euthanizing a newborn, then the supposed bright line of birth begins to disappear.
Harden says this is the question Americans must confront before Canada’s radical medical experiment becomes tomorrow’s debate in the United States.
“This is where moral relativism leads when human value is determined by someone else’s judgment,” Harden argues. “Once we decide that certain human beings are less worthy of protection because they are dependent, disabled, unwanted, or suffering, there is no logical reason the line must stop at birth.”
Canada’s rapidly expanding Medical Assistance in Dying program has already generated international controversy. Now, the discussion surrounding euthanasia is moving into territory once considered unthinkable: whether physicians should have the authority to intentionally end the lives of newborn children.
Harden can explain why the emerging debate represents more than a Canadian controversy. He argues it exposes a fundamental contradiction at the heart of the abortion debate: If a child can be intentionally killed moments before birth, on what moral principle is that same child suddenly untouchable moments afterward?
The progression is becoming impossible to ignore: First trimester. Second trimester. Third trimester. And now, potentially, the 10th month.
