63 Since ’63: 63 Years Later, 2026 Technology Could Vindicate JFK Assassination Witness Through Iconic Photo
For 63 years, one of the most enduring questions surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy has centered on Dealey Plaza: Was there more than one gunman? CIA pilot and author of Deep Cover, Shallow Graves, Robert ‘Tosh’ Plumlee was there that day and is available for interviews. He was a co-pilot that flew an assassination abort team to Dallas that morning. While standing on the south knoll with his friend Sergio, Tosh felt a bullet fly over his head from the left. Shortly after that, JFK’s head exploded.

While investigators, historians and conspiracy theorists have focused overwhelmingly on the infamous grassy knoll to the north and its picket fence, another elevated position has received remarkably little attention — the South Knoll, directly opposite it.
That is where Robert “Tosh” Plumlee says he was standing when the shots rang out. He even drew a diagram for the FBI that subsequently disappeared, though he did draw it again, years later.
Plumlee, who has long maintained that he was in Dallas as part of an operation intended to stop an assassination attempt, says he was positioned on the South Knoll with another man. He recalls hearing a shot pass over his head from his left and has consistently pointed investigators toward that largely forgotten location. In interviews, Plumlee has described himself as being approximately 150 feet east of the Triple Underpass, on the South Knoll and in line with the plaza’s light poles.
Now, 63 years after that infamous day, Plumlee believes a photograph taken by UPI photographer Frank Cancellare could provide a fresh opportunity to examine what was happening on the South Knoll.
Cancellare’s photograph — taken moments after Kennedy was shot and published the following day — captured Bill and Gayle Newman shielding their children on the ground, with the Dealey Plaza landscape behind them. The image has long been examined in connection with the assassination, but modern image-enhancement technology raises a tantalizing question: What might be visible in the background that could not be clearly resolved in 1963?
Plumlee says the image captures what appears to be a man under a tree, handling a long gun, as well as what appears to be a spotter standing next to a nearby truck.
Plumlee’s contention is provocative: If the photograph can establish the presence of a person positioned as a shooter — potentially working with a spotter — on the South Knoll, it could dramatically change the decades-old debate over what happened in Dealey Plaza.
The North Grassy Knoll became synonymous with the “second shooter” theory. Witnesses reported believing shots came from that area, and police immediately searched behind the fence. But what if investigators and historians have spent six decades looking in the wrong direction?
Plumlee says he knows what he heard and where he was standing.
Now he wants the photograph subjected to the technology of 2026.
