The former Mayor of Shiloh explains why there’s more to this decision than simply saving face.
Earlier this week, the Israeli military announced that it would be providing a “tactical pause” during each day in the Rafah area, giving humanitarian aid the chance to help out people within the allotted time frame. However, it appears that its own Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is against said plan.
“When the prime minister heard the reports of an 11-hour humanitarian pause in the morning, he turned to his military secretary and made it clear that this was unacceptable to him,” an unnamed Israeli official explained shortly following the decision.
Netanyahu has been assured that “there is no change” to the policy at hand, and “fighting in Rafah continues as planned.”
There are sure to be criticisms surrounding this, especially considering the thousands of people that have already been killed with this conflict. But does Netanyahu have his reasons for hesitation?
Joining us now to discuss this further is David Rubin, former Mayor of Shiloh and founder of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund. His first-hand knowledge of what’s happening in Israel make him a perfect guest for this show. Welcome, David!
Q&A:
- What do you think about the Israeli military calling for a “tactical pause” for humanitarian aid? Did they see it as needed?
- Why do you believe Netanyahu is critical of the move? Is he concerned that Hamas could strike back during this time? Or is there something else to consider?
- Could Netanyahu’s criticism of his own military’s decision cause confusion amongst those that have already provided negative opinions against him? Or does it even matter to him at this point?
- If a “tactical pause” isn’t the proper solution for humanitarian aid, what approach do you believe should be taken?
