Why Does Shon Barnes Believe the Second Amendment Isn’t “Appropriate”?

A spokesman for the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms discusses the poor statement by the potential future chief of police for Seattle.

Seattle has seen quite an increase in crime over the past few years, mainly due to the failure by the government to hire more police officers and provide better support for gun rights. But things are about to get worse, especially if Shon Barnes, current chief of police in Madison, Wisconsin, gets sworn into the city.

Back in 2022, Barnes made a note that the Second Amendment is no longer “appropriate” in today’s society. The exact statement reads, “We have a lot of things that are legal, but is it the right thing to do? We have to rise above that. And sometimes it requires an evolution of our thinking. What was written in 1789 may not be appropriate for 2022 unless we’re okay with kids being killed.”

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb was quick to respond to finding this statement. “Simply because society may have evolved since the Bill of Rights was ratified does not mean we should surrender the right of self-defense, much less the right to keep and bear arms.

“If Barnes is selected to lead the Seattle Police Department, he should understand the rank-and-file supports the Second Amendment, and that since the city began pushing its gun control agenda ten years ago, the number of homicides has nearly tripled. We’re never ‘okay’ with kids getting killed. In fact, we’re not okay with anyone getting killed.

“We are also alarmed,” Gottlieb continued, “that if Barnes thinks the Second Amendment may not be appropriate, what other rights does he think are outdated? What about the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination?”

Gottlieb concluded, “Washington state’s constitution has one of the strongest right-to-bear-arms provisions in the country. Evergreen State citizens, especially those living in Seattle and surrounding King County, are not about to give up their rights. They can far better determine what is ‘appropriate’ in the Pacific Northwest, and our rights never go out of style.”

A spokesman for the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) joins us now to discuss this matter further.

Q&A:

  1. Why would Barnes make such a far-fetched statement about the Second Amendment no longer being “appropriate”?
  2. Despite “appropriateness,” the Second Amendment in the Constitution should still be able to stand, since it is every American’s right, correct?
  3. What do you think will happen to Seattle if Barnes takes control of the police department? Will the situation get worse before it gets better?
  4. For that matter, could Barnes potentially convince the local government to try and tighten gun rights to citizens?
  5. Where do you see the argument surrounding gun rights going in 2025, especially as Donald Trump retakes Presidential office?
  6. Where can people call in to pledge their support to the CCRKBA?
    1. The number to support the group is (800) 699-0992.
  7. Where can we learn more about the CCRKBA and its members?
