Two Separate Incidents Bring China Infiltration Further Into Question For the United States (Guest: Nan Su)

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the arrest of two U.S. sailors, as well as an ongoing search for Chinese malware in U.S. operating systems.

Two recent incidents have the United States looking further into potential infiltration by the Chinese Communist Party and its allies.

First up, in an incident reported right before the weekend, Federal prosecutors have arrested two Navy sailors, accusing them of passing strict military information to China, creating a breach to U.S. National Security as a result. Patrick Wei and “Thomas” Zhao Wehneng will now face several charges, including bribes in exchange for sensitive information.

FBI Counterintelligence Division Assistant Director Suzanne Turner noted that these arrests serve as “a reminder of the relentless, aggressive efforts of the People’s Republic of China to undermine our democracy and threaten those who defend it.”

Meanwhile, right before that, U.S. officials have begun an exhausting search in various defense systems for Chinese malware, concerned about how it could cause trouble for military communications and resupply operations, according to the New York Times. The officials believe that such computer code could be hidden inside “networks controlling power grids, communications systems and water supplies that feed military bases.”

That could pose a problem, as one official noted it could be “a ticking time bomb” when it comes to access to power, water and communications to military bases.

So what’s going on? Here to discuss the matter further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. His expertise in all things China should provide further insight into these situations.

Q&A:

  1. First off, what do you think about the two sailors that were arrested for passing sensitive information to Chinese officers? Is it that easy for potential members of the CCP to infiltrate our very military?
  2. Could this possibly call for a deeper search for “moles” or potential “traitors” within military groups? Could we see more arrests as a result?
  3. Now let’s talk about how Chinese malware could be embedded in military networks. What kind of catastrophic damage could come from this if it ends up being activated?
  4. We’ve heard Microsoft talk in the past about how information like this could serve the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) further. What can U.S. officials and computer experts do to stop such infiltration, if anything?
  5. What do both of these incidents say about the growing infiltration by China on these shores? Will it potentially get worse before it gets better?
  6. Do you believe the Judiciary Committee that’s currently looking into China will take a closer look at either of these incidents?
  7. Could all of this potentially lead to war between China and the United States over the next couple of years?
  8. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  9. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
