The law enforcement veteran and InVest USA founder discusses the case, and how easily it could be for the media to once again attack cops.
A recent sentencing has put the spotlight back on the police – and brings up questions about what happens when cops go “rogue.”
Two more deputies were sentenced in the torture and sexual assault of two black men this week. Rankin sheriff deputy Christian Dedmon was sentenced to 40 years in prison, while ex-deputy Daniel Opdyke will serve 17 and a half years in prison. This follows two other sentencings of former officers, with 20 and 18 years, respectively. In addition, two more officers are set to be sentenced later this week.
At a time when police officers are struggling to keep up with growing criminal activity in the United States, an incident like this will likely have the media discussing their morals, and whether the “defund the police” movement that took place years ago was for the better. But the thing most media doesn’t realize is that these “rogue” incidents don’t define what the police are about.
Joining us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is President, Founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His expertise in all things law and order make him an ideal subject for this interview.
In a statement, Letts noted, “Some rogue law enforcement, tragically, but contrary to assertions that law enforcement are never held accountable, this story proves the opposite….and they are punished more severely…..tragic, but rightly so in the punishment given.”
Welcome, Mr. Letts.
Q&A:
- Based on your experience, what do you think could make a cop turn “rogue”? The need for more money? Something else?
- Why are the media so quick to jump on stories revolving around “bad cops”?
- When the media reports a story to make the police look bad, how does this affect those police officers that are just trying to do their jobs? The “good” cops, as it were?
- Do a lot of these media types enjoy jumping on stories revolving around “defund the police”? What kind of effect does this leave on officers just trying to do their job?
- You noted how the punishment of these “Goon Squad” officers is “tragic, but rightly so.” Do you believe they’ll learn their lesson from this?
- What can we take away from a situation such as this? Will this have an effect on police officers simply trying to do their duty?
- You’re the creator of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers across a number of programs. Tell us more about it.
- Where can we learn more about InVest USA, and how those interested can help their fellow officers, especially in their time of need?
- You can visit our official InVest USA website, and learn more on the official Invest USA Twitter account. You can also learn about my new initiative at RestoringJustice.US, where we discuss lawful issues surrounding citizens of the United States.
