TOXIC FIRE PITS Guest: Michael Letts

The New Agent Orange?

Interview guest Michael Letts of InVest USA

Many people were introduced to the term “toxic fire pits,” for the first time during Joe Biden’s State of the Union address. But what are toxic fire pits?

Joining us to help answer this question and more is Michael Letts, founder, and CEO of InVest USA, a charity that offers bulletproof vests and other protection to police and other first responders.

Q&A:

  1. What are toxic fire pits, and how are they being compared to Agent Orange defoliant used in Viet Nam?

Answer: They were burn piles in Afghanistan of anything from garbage to excrement and burned with jet fuel as the accelerant. Just as Agent Orange was determined to be a cancerous carcinogen, these first pits are believed to be carcinogenic.

  1. How dangerous is it to breathe the fumes of these firepits?

Answer: Apparently very dangerous. Jet fuel is meant to be burned in jets with their exhaust high overhead that gets diluted down in the air long before it reaches tender lungs below. It’s not meant to be inhaled from a makeshift campfire. This potential carcinogen affects countless veterans in isolated or Forward Base and Staging Camps. We can all relate to the disposal of waste in temporary military camps, but to do so in a way that infects the air our servicemen and women breathe while in those temporary areas is inhuman at best.

  1. What do you think should be done about soldiers injured from breathing toxic fumes from these fire pits?

Answer: Our government needs to support them with the best medical care available.

  1. Can you commentary about Joe Biden’s statement promising to “spend money to fix the problem,” meaning the damage caused from toxic fire pits.

Answer: The President highlighted this during his State of the Union address. For that, veterans and those now serving as First Responders are indeed grateful. His promise to “spend money to fix the problem”, will hopefully be the first promise he actualy delivers in the right way.”

  1. Tell us about InVest USA and how you help veterans.

Answer: 80 percent of law enforcement and first responders are prior military. We support them by providing state-of-the-art first responder vests to protect them from bullets to the chest.

  1. Where may we get more information or support your work at InVest USA?

Answer: InVestUSA.org

Michael Letts is the CEO and Founder of  InVest USA, a national non-profit charitable organization based in Columbia, South Carolina, helping hundreds of communities provide thousands of bulletproof vests for their police forces through educational, public relations, sponsorship, and fundraising programs.
