There Needs to Be a Better Warning System in Place for Would-Be “Active Shooters” (Guest: Michael Letts)

Law enforcement veteran Michael Letts explains how justice failed the victims of the Michigan State shooting this week – and what can be done about it.

Earlier this week, a tragic “active shooter” event took place in Michigan State, with gunman Anthony Dwayne McRae taking the lives of three students and injuring five others. He would later take his own life.

While there are questions as to how the shooting take place, it’s what happened in McRae’s past that is of concern to many.

It turns out McRae was arrested back in 2019, being charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. Had that charge managed to stick, he would’ve had a felony on his record – something that would have prevented him from buying firearms in the future. But, instead, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for possession of a loaded firearm, serving a year and a half probation instead.

So this could have been prevented had justice actually been carried out. And it sounds like McRae could’ve done even more damage, based on this report that he planned to carry out attacks on New Jersey schools.

What can be done about this to serve as warning signs for the future? Here to discuss the matter further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is president, founder and CEO for InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers, through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His expertise will prove useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Did the justice system fail those Michigan State students on Monday night? Could more have been done to prevent McRae from getting his hands on a firearm?
  2. What do you think the biggest problem is when it comes to setting up a system that identifies threats that could execute “active shooter” attacks, such as the one on the university?
  3. Do you think part of the problem is the lack of police officers to put such a system in place? Or is that something the Department of Justice and even the FBI could have done?
  4. What do you think can be done in the future to prevent “active shooter” events like the one that took place in Michigan State? Or is there such an easy answer to that question?
  5. We understand you’ve been frustrated over the past couple of years with the treatment of police officers, namely with lack of funding (due to the “defund the police” protests and riots) and inefficient support from some local governments. Are you hoping to see a turnaround from this in 2023?
  1. You’re the creator of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. Tell us more about that, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
  2. We understand that InVest USA is also actively involved with Twitter. Where can interested parties learn more?
