The Supreme Court Has Knocked Down New York’s Concealed-Carry Gun Law, Allowing Citizens To Defend Themselves (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Despite New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ objection to it, the Supreme Court opted to move forward with declaring New York’s concealed-carry gun law illegal.

The Supreme Court voted 6-3 to striking down the law, continuing its run of Second Amendment-themed protections. As a result, many believe that this could help provide better protections for those looking to own guns.

Through the Amendment, the court decided to protect the “individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation.” With that, New York can no longer ask applicants to demonstrate “proper cause” when it comes to obtaining a license for a gun in public. (That said, a license is still required for ownership.)

Adams was quick to respond to the decision, believing that it will “put New Yorkers at further risk of gun violence.” He also noted that “we will do whatever is in our power, using every resource available, to ensure that the gains we’ve seen during this administration are not undone, to make certain New Yorkers are not put in further danger of gun violence.”

Stephen Willeford joins us today to speak further about the striking down of New York’s gun law. Stephen serves as a spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may also recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise will provide some insight to this matter.

Q&A:

  1. How do you feel about the Supreme Court knocking down New York’s gun law?
  2. Do you believe this is a triumph for gun owners everywhere?
  3. Is it possible that other states could follow suit and set up laws to assist with concealed and open-carry for private citizens?
  4. Mayor Adams believes the removal of the law will “put New Yorkers at the risk of gun violence.” But could this actually turn around the city’s rising crime rate? Shouldn’t Adams be more concerned about bring that down?
  5. He also believes that he “cannot allow New York to become the Wild West.” Do you believe this is a jaded perspective, and perhaps an insult to gun owners?
  6. How do you think the Supreme Court’s recent Second Amendment-themed decisions will collide with President Joe Biden’s proposed “bipartisan” anti-gun legislation?
  7. Where can we learn more about you and your current work with the Gun Owners of America, as well as your “good guy with a gun” story?
