Senate Democrats Are Targeting Illegal Machine Guns With New Bill, But How Far Will It Go? (Guest: Second Amendment Foundation)

With the rise in active shooter events and the sales of “auto sears” – which turn semiautomatic pistols and rifles into full-auto weapons – Senate Democrats are hoping to do something about it in terms of a new bill.

Per this report from The Trace, a group of Democrats, led by Minnesota’s Amy Klobuchar and Michigan’s Gary Peters, are hoping to introduce a bill to hold back on the sales of “auto sears,” as well as increasing federal efforts to crack down on how they’re sold. This comes after a report indicated that they have been recovered in more than 260 Federal prosecutions since 2017.

“As we work to tackle the gun violence epidemic that is plaguing our country, we must address the alarming prevalence of gun conversion devices that can turn ordinary handguns into automatic weapons,” Klobuchar recently noted in a press statement. “These devices can be easily 3D printed or cheaply purchased online, but can have devastating consequences for public safety.”

It’s unknown what kind of traction the bill will get in Congress, nor what kind of effect it’ll have when it comes to private gun sales. To discuss this in further detail, we’ve invited a spokesperson from the 2nd Amendment Foundation to provide their perspective on the matter.

Q&A:

  1. What are your thoughts on Democrats hunting after these “auto sears,” and how effective do you believe this bill will be?
  2. It sounds like even with the bill in effect, people will still find a way to access “auto sears,” either by printing it themselves or purchasing it online. Does that make this bill seem like a waste of time?
  3. If it somehow gets passed, how do you believe this bill will affect private gun collectors?
  4. In a way, could the bill introduce even more attention to “auto sears,” making them easier to access?
  5. Considering you’re a member of the Second Amendment Foundation, what are your thoughts on “auto sears” as a whole, and who should be provided the most access to them?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
  7. Those interested can visit http://www.saf.org/.
