Saudi Arabia’s Recent Huawei Deal Strengthens Its Ties With China – But What Does It Mean For the United States? (Guest: The Epoch Times’ Nan Su)

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su explains why this should be of some concern to the States, especially when it comes to the value of the dollar.

In an effort to strengthen its partnership with China, Saudi Arabia recently signed a “comprehensive strategic partnership agreement” with President Xi Jinping, which will bring one of the country’s biggest tech companies, Huawei, to their region.

While Saudi Arabia sees this as a landmark deal to add strength to its relationship with China, it could mean trouble for the United States. There’s already been talk of concern about a potential security risk with China’s technology, as Huawei has continued its growth of 5G networks across a number of Gulf states.

Considering that the U.S. was hesitant to reach an energy agreement with Saudi Arabia (mainly due to its policy not meeting their terms and the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi), King Salman’s deal with Jinping and China seemed to be a long-time coming. But what will this mean for the United States down the road?

With us now is Nan Su, who serves as senior correspondent for The Epoch Times. His expertise on all things Chinese government will be quite useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Are you surprised that Saudi Arabia has signed this deal with China and Huawei, or did you think it was inevitable given that it wasn’t able to reach an agreement with the United States?
  2. What does this say for Saudi Arabia strengthening its ties on a global stage, and potentially “bouncing back” from the controversy surrounding the death of Khashoggi?
  3. Would you say that a disdain for the United States drew Saudi Arabia and China closer together as far as the deal went?
  4. What does this say for the value of the U.S. dollar? We know Saudi Arabia is one of many countries looking into gold-based currency, and now Chinese Yuan appears to be getting involved as well.
  5. Do you think there is anything that President Joe Biden could have done to prevent this deal? Or was it pretty much set in stone?
  6. Where do you see the partnership going in 2023? Could China continue to try and get more anti-U.S. allies on their side for more global outreach?
  7. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
