San Bernadino Calls For an Amendment To “Fund the Police Forever” (Guest: Michael Letts)

The law enforcement veteran discusses the new initiative, and why more cities should embrace it and take care of their police officers.

At a time when some states continue to believe in the ideas of the “defund the police” movement that started years ago, one particular city in California has a much different take.

The local government of San Bernadino County is now asking its voters to back a “Fund the Police Forever” policy. The County’s Board of Supervisors recently gave a thumbs up to a charter amendment, one that will require the county to “protect the community from potential defunding of law enforcement services.”

Titled “Proposition L,” the amendment will require the Board to “allocate a minimum amount of funding in its annual budget to fund County Patrol Personnel’s direct salary and benefit costs for operations in the incorporated area of the County.” Of course, it still needs to be approved by voters, but several higher-ups are pushing hard for the changes.

Dawn Rowe, who serves as a supervisor for the city, noted, “We’ve had a lot of conversations in the municipalities around us about defunding the police. That’s not something we’re interested in. We want to say we favor public safety.” She added, “We don’t ever want future boards of supervisors to be able to take public safety away in our very rural and remote areas of the county.”

This is a strong initiative and one that other cities – particularly New York City – could learn from when it comes to taking better care of their officers.

Joining us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is President, Founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various programs. His expertise in all things law and order make him a great guest for this program.
