Considering the fallout that came from the Uvalde incident a few weeks back, some school districts aren’t taking any chances when it comes to protecting students during active shooter events.
This includes Madison County, North Carolina, as its school system recently approved putting AR-15 rifles in emergency safes on school grounds. Each of the six schools will provide limited access to the weapons just in case danger strikes.
Along with the rifles, Sheriff Buddy Harwood also noted, “We’ve also got breaching tools to go into those safes. We’ve got extra magazines with ammo in those safes.”
He noted that, “I do not want to have to run back out to the car to grab an AR, because that’s time lost. Hopefully we’ll, never need it, but I want my buys to be as prepared as prepared can be.”
To discuss this new initiative, we welcome a spokesperson from the 2nd Amendment Foundation to provide their perspective on the matter.
Q&A:
- How helpful will it be for select law-enforcing officers to have access to rifles already on the grounds, in an effort to avoid what took place in Uvalde a few weeks back? Sheriff Hardwood seems very optimistic in terms of its success.
- The schools are working closely with law enforcement when it comes to protecting and, if necessary, utilizing the weapons in case of an attack. Do you believe this could be a very effective plan in the long run? Are there any improvements that can be made later on?
- There are some that would argue against having AR-15’s and extra shells locked up in schools. But how important is it when it comes to safety?
- If you had the chance to speak to someone direct about their concerns over AR-15’s being locked up in safes at schools, what would you say?
- What do you think about other states picking up similar initiatives to this one, especially if this proves to be a great success?
