New DOJ Report Digs Deep into Police Interactions – Finds Positive News (Guest: Michael Letts)

Over the past couple of years, many people have been painting police officers negatively, even getting to the point that they supported ”defund the police” campaigns. But a new report from the US Department of Justice recently revealed some new data indicating how these attacks ae unwarranted.

According to Lawenforcementtoday’s recent article, the report indicates that, based on Gallup data, “An estimated 40 million U.S. residents age 16 or older, or about 17 percent of the population, had a face-to-face contact with a police officer in one year. Among people who had face-to-face contact, about nine out of 10 residents felt the police were respectful or acted properly.”

“Less than half of White Americans (44%) and Black Americans (42%), and about half of Hispanic Americans (49%), say they have interacted with police in the past 12 months. The majority in each of these groups report that the interactions were generally positive.”

Based on these numbers, 88 percent of those polled had positive interaction with police response, while 93 percent stated they would contact them again. Furthermore, only 4 percent of residents reported any sort of police action, with only 1 percent overall seeing any sort of misconduct.

And yet, the police still seem to be painted in a negative light, particularly by certain politicians who still seem to be on board with the “defund the police” idea.

With us now to discuss the findings of this report is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts currently serves as founder, CEO and president for InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His expertise will be  useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Upon hearing these numbers, do you believe that most of the public’s perception of police officers shouldn’t be so negative ?
  2. Do you believe some politicians are a little bit “out of control” when it comes to still trying to get police officers defunded?
  3. Why do you think the media isn’t reporting on these numbers enough? Shouldn’t a report like this be more shared when it comes to giving the police some much needed positivity?
  4. Do you think these numbers will continue to carry over into 2023, especially with several new recruits joining the ranks in various states?
  5. In your view, how important is professionalism when it comes to police duties?
  1. You’re the driving factor of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. Tell us more about that, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
