More details have emerged in a case surrounding a 27-year-old’s alleged rape of a child, forcing them to travel cross-state to get an abortion.
According to a new report from Dr. Caitlin Bernard, the alleged rapist was listed as approximately 17 years old in the official filing to the Indiana Department of Health, according to Fox News. This follows the suspect, Gerson Fuentes, reportedly confessing to the crime to the Columbus Police Department.
In addition, the mother of the 10-year-old child recently spoke to Telemundo, noting that her daughter was “fine” and “everything they say about (Gerson) is a lie.”
Rev. Jim Harden, CEO of CompassCare, an expert in medical ethics and women’s reproductive health care, joins us to speak further about the complications surrounding this matter.
Q&A:
- What do you think about how the alleged rapist was erroneously listed as approximately 17 years old in the official report?
- What did you think of the mother’s answers regarding addressing abortion? Do you believe fear and confusion could have played a part in her response?
- Indiana noted it would consider investigating Bernard for failing to report the abortion, despite the fact that the formal report was filed earlier in the month. What kind of legal repercussions could this have down the road?
- What kind of precedents could this set for abortion laws in the future, considering all the national attention this is getting?
- What does this case say about the state of abortion overall and the effects that come from it? Could there be more sympathy for rape victims or more legal arguments?
- Tell us about your work helping women at Compass Care and where we may get more information.
