Matthew McConaughey’s Pleas To U.S. Lawmakers On Gun Control Do Say a Bit – But What Will Happen Now? (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Just days following the deadly Uvalde, Texas shooting that resulted in the deaths of 19 students, one grandmother and two teachers, actor Matthew McConaughey decided to speak directly to Congress during an appearance at the White House this week.

In his speech, McConaughey, who owns several guns himself, pleaded with Congress to “reach a higher ground” when it comes to gun legislation. “We want secure and safe schools and we want gun laws that won’t make it so easy for the bad guys to get the damn guns,” McConaughey proclaimed. “We are in a window of opportunity right now that we have not been in before. A window where it seems like real change can happen.”

During the 22-minute address, McConaughey shared stories about some of the personal victims of the shootings, as well as his own experience learning about guns in Uvalde. But he also made a plea for change to be made. “We need to invest in mental healthcare. We need safer schools. We need to restrain sensationalized media coverage. We need to restore our family values. We need to restore our American values and we need responsible gun ownership.”

He concluded, “Is this a cure-all? Hell no, but people are hurting.”

Speaking to us now in response to McConaughey’s comments s Stephen Willeford. Stephen serves as a spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may also recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.
