Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address Leaves Law Enforcement Questions (Guest: Michael Letts)

InVest USA’s Michael Letts takes a closer look at the latest commentary from the President.

Tuesday’s SOTU address by President Joe Biden left a lot of questions in its wake – especially surrounding police officers.

The President called for America to “finish the job on police reform,” just days following the tragic death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis. To further push the initiative, Biden  even invited Tyre’s family.

“I know most cops and their families are good, decent, honorable people. The vast majority. They risk their lives every time they put on their shield,” he said during one of the more powerful moments of the night. “But what happened to Tyre in Memphis happens too often. We have to do better.”

But while the President’s statement resonated with some people, he reflected on getting police “the training they need,” including increasing resources to reduce crime as a whole, community intervention programs and further investment in housing and job training.

That said, however, he did very little to provide comfort to police. He falsely continued to state that America was one of the safest nations, even in the face of rapidly growing crime rates in several cities. And there was no mention of what was happening with his “fund the police” bill that he insisted get put into place months prior.

So was the whole thing for show, or will Biden actually support an  initiative to protect police officers and the Border Patrol officers he has criticized  all too often in the past?

With us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with 30 years of experience. Michael is president, founder and CEO for InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His expertise should prove very useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. After watching the State of the Union, what do you think about President Biden’s attitude  towards police officers as a whole? What more can he do to provide the support they need?
  2. He called upon America to “finish the job on police reform,” yet did very little to discuss the “fund the police” bill that’s making its way through the House. Shouldn’t he be putting in some effort as well? Or are his hands tied within his own administration?
  3. Biden noted that, following the death of Nichols, police officers should get “the training they need.” But to what extent should this training go? What if an officer is put into a life-or-death situation and forced to act a certain way based on training?
  4. Why would Biden say that America is the safest nation in the world with crime being as out of control as it is in several states?
  5. If you had the opportunity to put together a police training bill, how would you go about it?
  1. You’re the creator of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. Tell us more about that, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
  2. We understand that InVest USA is also actively involved with Twitter. Where can interested parties learn more?
