Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford wonders why the NFL and NASCAR are getting involved in the first place.
The Undetectable Firearms Act, which was initially signed in 1988, is set to expire. The law made it illegal to manufacture or possess any firearm not detectable via metal detector or X-ray, also mandating that there be at least four ounces of metal within it.
That said, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) has taken it upon himself to recruit some unlikely help in the hopes of getting the law re-signed. And that includes…sports leagues?
Yep, it appears that the NFL and NASCAR – along with some of its representatives – are pushing alongside Schumer to get the UFA (as it’s called) reauthorized.
Which is interesting, as, according to the Gun Owners of America, “Either the NFL and NASCAR don’t realize who their audience is – or, they simply do not care and are willing to sell out their Second Amendment-supporting fanbase for the sake of cozying up to politicians in the Swamp.”
Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford now joins us to discuss the matter. You may recall Willeford being the “hero with a gun” in the 2017 Sutherland Springs incident, which he has since co-authored a book about. His expertise on all things gun rights make him a perfect subject for this interview. Welcome, Mr. Willeford.
Q&A:
- Why is it so important that the Undetectable Firearms Act (UFA) come to an end? Will this score a victory for private gun owners or those concerned with Concealed-Carry (or Constitutional-Carry)?
- For that matter, why hasn’t Schumer pushed for its re-signing before? Why get sports leagues involved?
- Why do you think the NFL and NASCAR agreed so quickly to help push for the UFA’s reauthorization? Is it a matter of money? Or something else?
- What do you think will come of the law? Could Biden and his administration possibly prepare something else in its place?
- What kind of weight will the subject of guns have in the forthcoming 2024 Presidential Election, you think?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
