Is China Stopping Citizens From Leaving Their Country? (Guest: Nan Su)

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the country’s attempts to control misinformation by preventing particular citizens from leaving.

In the latest move that’s creating tension with its people, China appears to be stopping certain people from traveling outside of the country.

Based on this report from Newsbreak, thousands, including foreign executives and Chinese nations, are being hit with exit bans. Some have tried to fight against them in court, but, at the moment, this is preventing them from doing any traveling outside the country.

But why? According to investigative reporter Nan Su, there are two primary reasons. The first is to stop “money outlaws” from leaving the country with contraband funds; and the second involves letting people leave with any sort of negative information surrounding the regime.

This has led to a number of Chinese migrants who have been trying to travel to Central America, only to then walk long-distance to the U.S.-Mexico border. This would explain why more migrants have been working on getting into the United States.

But is the ban ethical? And just how long will it last under Xi Jinping’s rule? Nan Su joins us now to discuss the matter further, bringing his expertise on all things China with him.

Q&A:

  1. What would you say is the biggest reason that China would impose this ban on those traveling outside this country?
  2. Is it legal by any means? Or is it simply Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) trying to control misinformation from those that know it firsthand?
  3. This seems like a bit of contrast compared to the country being “open for business” following its reversal on COVID restrictions. In fact, some business lobby groups have already called them out for it. Do you expect Jinping or any Chinese officials to have any sort of response?
  4. We’ve been hearing that the Newsbreak story that discusses the ban is actually banned in China. Should we be surprised?
  5. Could the United States potentially step in if the ban gets too out of hand – such as, for instance, preventing Americans from leaving the country? (If it gets to that point.)
  6. This appears to be tied in with a counter-espionage law of some kind, which allows bans to be imposed on anyone, Chinese or foreign, under “investigation”. But is this a bit of overreach, especially if evidence is circumstantial?
  7. Speaking of what’s going on with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  8. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
