The law enforcement veteran believes the troubled Governor should focus more on the present, rather than the future.
Gov. Gavin Newsom is attempting to deal with a large deficit with his state of California. But what he suggested in doing so could be troubling for millions of his citizens.
According to this report, California Democrats have proposed a new budget, released last month, that notes “difficult decisions” having to be made to address the $27.6 billion deficit. With it, they, along with Newsom, suggest slashing budgets for the police, as well as trial court operations and the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. To the tune of nearly $200 million.
A spokesperson for the state noted, “The budget proposes numerous ways to make government more efficient and reduce costs for taxpayers, including cuts on inmate spending. Since Governor Newsom took office in 2019, the state has made record investments in law enforcement, including $1.1 billion to tackle crime, support police, and hold criminals accountable.”
With this proposed budget, however, the city is not only looking to cut back on its debt, but also “doubling down” on climate goals that Newsom had put in place. That’s right, he’s more concerned about what happens to his state in the future, rather than keeping crime under control in the present.
With Newsom’s mistakes, it appears that law enforcement officials will pay the price.
Joining us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is President, Founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships.
His expertise in all things law and order make him an ideal guest for this show. Welcome, Michael!
Q&A:
- What do you think about Newsom’s proposed budget cuts to law enforcement in an effort to catch up on debt and meet climate goals?
- Is it a bit ironic that Newsom is more concerned about the future of the state with climate, rather than its current state with an increase in crime?
- How badly could this move cost Newsom when it comes to re-election? How many officers do you believe will be unhappy with the move and potentially leave their post?
- You’ve already seen a number of cuts in law enforcement across other states, mainly because the government refuses to green light any sort of “fund the police” budget. How frustrating is it to see this?
- Is California doomed? Or could Republicans potentially introduce some sort of plan to keep police from losing their funding?
- Who’s to blame for all this money loss in California? Is it all on Newsom, or are his Democrats to blame?
- You’re the creator of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. Tell us more about that, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
- Where can we learn more about InVest USA, and how those interested can help their fellow officers.
