How Is China Using the Israel-Hamas Conflict To Its Advantage?

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the country’s latest move to build allies, even in the face of an ongoing war.

With so many countries picking sides in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, China appears to be taking a more curious approach.

According to this piece from Axios, Beijing is pushing its global agenda by trying to gain favor with several Arab states as the war goes on. Although it did note it condemned violence against civilians in the war, it didn’t denounce Hamas by any means.

According to Jonathan Fulton, a senior non-resident at the Atlantic Council, “China is trying to promote alternative norms in global politics, and China sees Arab states as a natural constituency for China to try to attract. By appealing to Arab countries, they’ll get more support for the reforms they want to push through in the international system.”

So why didn’t China call against Hamas? Mor Sobol, an assistant professor for Tamkang University in Taiwan, noted, “China is looking to score points with the Arab countries.”

But one thing the country looks determined to do is pass the blame on the war to someone else – namely the United States. Several critics have called out U.S. normalization of relations between Israel and Arab nations, as well as its support for Israeli government. As a result, Palestinians may have been feeling pressure.

Sobol noted, “It’s a very cost-effective strategy in the Middle East. They are calling the U.S. a biased actor, they are trying to decrease American influence in the region. They are playing the long game.”

Joining us now to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. His expertise in all things China make him an ideal subject for this discussion.

Q&A:

  1. So, even though they haven’t “picked a side” in the Israel-Hamas war, it seems that China is definitely leaning more towards the Hamas side. Will this come back to hurt Xi Jinping and the CCP in any way?
  2. What do you think about them openly criticizing the United States for its relations to Israel, and for “pressuring” Palestinians in the process? Is it just another round of the blame game?
  3. Do you believe China will actually make good with Arab countries as a result from this? Or could they see right through Jinping’s strategy?
  4. There’s been talk of a potential conflict between China and the United States sometime in the future. Could we see this happening, or does the country even have the resources to strike back anymore, given its financial strife?
  5. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  6. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
  7. You can visit our official website at http://www.theepochtimes.com. There are also various documentaries available over on Epoch TV.
