How Has Covid Impacted Relationships?

Marriage expert Mort Fertel available via Skype or Zoom/Maryland/Eastern Time

Intro: The Covid-19 pandemic has created a ‘new normal’ state of millions more people spending instant additional concentrated time at home together. Sounds great, right? More lovey-dovey time with our mates, extra time with our children, and the convenience of working from home. Now that we’re around the half year mark, a fair question is: how has Covid-19 impacting relationships. Here to join us in answering this question is nationally recognized marriage expert Mort Fertel of Marriage Max.

Q&A:

  1. How has Covid impacted relationships?

A: It’s torn us away from so many of our friends, loved ones, and work colleagues. One personal example: My father fell and had to be put in a facility; I can’t even visit him. We’re isolated and don’t interact with people the way we used to do. Most people feel less connected and that’s emotionally devastating. Suicide is up. Depression is up. Life satisfaction is down. It’s not good.

  1. Q: But we have technology to connect us, right?

A: This has been great for Zoom but not for our relationships. Of course, we have to do the best we can under the circumstances, so we use technology to try to stay connected. But I think Covid has just exacerbated an already bad trend for relationships, that is that there is less and less face to face interaction. Technology is great for business, but not for relationships. Digital communication is high in efficiency, but it is low in intimacy. True connection requires face to face interaction.

  1. Q: So, what can we do to improve our lives in this situation?

A: Focus on improving your relationship with your husband or wife, and your children. We’ve lost so much control lately. We can’t work, we can’t travel, we can’t go out, we can’t see people, but our wife, our husband, our children, they’re right there, ready for us to connect with. What an opportunity!

  1. Q: You and your wife both caught Covid-19. How was that experience?
