Has China Backed Itself Into a Corner With COVID? (Guest: The Epoch Times’ Nan Su)

The Epoch Times investigative reporter Nan Su explains how China has gotten themselves into a no-win situation surrounding COVID-19.

While the rest of the world continues to try and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic that has ravaged the past couple of years, China finds itself in a bit of a quandary.

Following the country’s poorly planned zero-COVID exit plans, a new study revealed by CNN indicates that an unprecedented wave of infections is expected, which could lead to one million deaths.

This is following many moves by the Chinese government to try and contain COVID, including strict lockdowns, quarantines, an abundant amount of testing and rigorous contact tracing. Its switch to an exit strategy could now bring it back, and in a worse state than ever before.

Part of the game, however, lies with China’s inability to work with the United States in terms of COVID support. White House spokesperson John Kirby noted that its government is willing to help if asked. However, Wang Wenbin, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, voiced a high level of confidence in the country’s political system.

What’s more, while China has allowed Paxlovid to be sold within its borders, it’s asking for $400 a case – a price far too expensive for most of the population.

Here to speak with us now on the effects of this pandemic – and what could possibly happen next – is Nan Su. He is an investigative reporter for The Epoch Times and an expert in all things Chinese government. His expertise will certainly prove useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. In a nutshell, did China’s government bring this COVID situation on themselves? Is there anything they could’ve really done to prevent such a clumsy “zero-COVID exit”?
  2. Why is Paxlovid selling so high in the country? Who do you think was behind the decision, and benefits the most from it?
  3. Why is China so stubborn to accept assistance from the United States? Has their frayed relationship in the past played a part in said decision?
  4. Do you think the results of the study could possibly end up being true? Will China see a massive body count from COVID due to its government’s own mistakes?
  5. Could the situation possibly get worse in 2023? Or will the country have no choice but to try and find an acceptable solution to resolving the problem?
  6. There’s a theory that some people believe that if they get Omicron first, the effects from Delta will be far less severe. What’s your take on this?
  7. You’ve noted that, over the past two years, China has been using the comparison between total infected cases in its own borders and the United States to their political advantage. Can you go into more detail about this?
  8. You recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it, and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  9. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
