Gun Owners of America Frustrated by the New Omnibus Bill (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

The group’s spokesman demonstrates that the bill is laden with issues that could adversely affect gun owners.

The Senate appears set to pass a $1.7 trillion bill around the start of the new year to finance federal agencies through September and provide around $45 billion in military and economic help to Ukraine. However, there are some smaller details that greatly concern Gun Owners of America.

In a newsletter sent out earlier this week, the group explained that the Omnibus is “riddled with gun control,” and that Mitch McConnell “hoped that pro-gun voters would be too distracted by the Christmas season” to notice its forthcoming passage. But that isn’t the case.

The group noted various issues within the bill, such as a massive 14.1 percent ATF budget increase that leans towards Biden’s pistol ban; a 50 percent increase for the ATF to maintain the near-billion record gun registry; $700 million in funding to bribe states to pass “Red Flag” gun confiscation laws; and money for anti-gun CDC research.

What’s even more concerning to the group is how several Senators from pro-gun states, including Texas and Oklahoma, are supporting the bill.

Here to speak with us about the bill is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Out of all the issues within the proposed Omnibus, what do you believe is the most concerning? Perhaps the one that benefits Biden’s pistol ban?
  2. Why do you believe these weren’t brought up earlier during  debate?
  3. Why is so much money being set aside to bribe states for passing “Red Flag” gun confiscation laws? An effort to make some states feel safer? Or something else?
  4. Are you concerned that the bill doesn’t seem to include anything to support Constitutional-Carry? Even with the fact that it’s an effective element against active shooters?
  5. If this does go into effect, how much will it hurt private gun owners in 2023?
  6. As a “hero with a gun” who has seen an active shooter situation first-hand, what can you tell us about the importance of Constitutional-Carry, and citizens stepping up to stop them before they can hurt innocent people?
  7. Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?
