Gun Group Challenging Massachusetts’ Firearm Ban (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

The spokesman for the Gun Owners of America discusses the unfair ban being put on 18 to 20-year olds by the state.

Even with President Donald Trump fighting for gun rights in the White House, some state legislators can’t help but continue to push for unfair bans against private gun owners.

In this particular case, the state of Massachusetts has unconstitutional restrictions on 18 to 20-year old adults possessing, purchasing or carrying semiautomatic firearms and handguns.

With that, the Gun Owners of America have vowed to fight back, working alongside the 2A Allies to file a lawsuit against the state, noting that the state’s laws violate the Second and Fourteenth Amendments of the Constitution by infringing upon the rights of these young adults.

Erich Pratt, who serves as Senior Vice President of the Gun Owners of America, discussed the lawsuit in a recent statement.

“The government has no right to pick and choose which Americans can exercise their Second Amendment rights. Massachusetts’ unconstitutional ban on young adults owning firearms for self-defense is an egregious attack on the rights of law-abiding citizens. If an 18-year-old can serve in the military, vote, and enter contracts, they absolutely have the right to defend themselves. GOA will fight to ensure this unconstitutional law is struck down.”

Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, who currently serves as spokesman for the GOA. Stephen is the “hero with a gun” from the Sutherland Springs incident in 2017, which he has since co-written a book about. We welcome him to the show!

Q&A:

  1. Why would Massachusetts have particular bans put in place for 18 to 20-year olds when it comes to semiautomatic weapon bans? Are they fearful that they’re the most likely to take part in “active shooter” events, or is it something else?
  2. Why do some states continue to try and pass gun laws such as this, especially since the Constitution – and, for that matter, President Donald Trump – provide protection for private gun owners?
  3. What are you hoping will come from this lawsuit?
  4. If the lawsuit is victorious, would other states possibly try to amend their ridiculous gun laws in response? Or do you believe they’ll continue on with them?
  5. Where do you see the fight surrounding gun rights going in 2025, especially with Trump providing his full support?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  8. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
