Gavin Newsom’s Push For a 28th Amendment Could Work Against the Second Amendment – and Private Gun Owning Citizens

Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains why Newsom’s newfound amendment could pose a big problem for those that choose to bear arms.

If California Governor Gavin Newsom gets his way, his suggestion for a new Amendment could do away with the rights that the Second Amendment provides American citizens.

Newsom has proposed a 28th Amendment , which would include a number of limitations to potential gun owners. That includes raising the age to buy a gun in the U.S. to 21; mandating background checks for those that wish to buy firearms; extending a waiting period for gun purchases; and, similar to President Joe Biden’s wishes, ban “assault weapons” nationwide.

In essence, he’s pushing for the first Constitutional convention since its original adoption in 1789 – one that could take place if two-thirds of state legislatures call for it.

Though legal experts and gun advocates believe this is a violation of the Second Amendment as people know it, it appears that the 28th Amendment is gaining traction, with the California State Senate’s Committee on Public Safety already approving it.

Though it does face a long road ahead of it, especially with so many pro-gun supporters serving through Congress and the Senate, the Gun Owners of America believe this is “the start of a decades-long campaign to build enough momentum to ram a gun control amendment through Congress and get it ratified by enough states.”

Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall that Willeford was the “hero with a gun” back in the 2017 Sutherland Springs incident, and he recently co-wrote a book on the subject. His expertise will certainly prove useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Why do you believe Newsom is so hellbent on getting this Amendment approved and added to the Constitution? Is he really that driven to take away Second Amendment rights from U.S. citizens?
  2. Why has he not considered other solutions to growing violence issues – say, for instance, Constitutional-Carry, which you believe is effective against “active shooters”?
  3. Do you believe Newsom can still get some variation of this Amendment passed through Congress, even with the many members that support gun makers and manufacturers? How would he do it?
  4. Newsom also believes he can get “assault weapons” banned. Do you think President Biden will provide him any support on this front, since he wants them banned as well?
  5. Where do you see the battle for gun control going over the next year, especially with the forthcoming 2024 Presidential election?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  8. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
