Florida’s Rejection of 50 Different Math Books Is Bringing What Children Are Taught Into Question

Earlier this week, the Florida Department of Education ended up rejecting more than 50 mathematical textbooks – nearly half of what has been submitted overall – for containing “prohibited topics.” Namely, they include references to Critical Race Theory. Some publishers were also accused of rebranding Common Core Standards within some of the banned books.

This is part of Governor Ron DeSantis’ latest push to quell “woke indoctrination” when it comes to what is taught in public schools. “It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core, and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students,” DeSantis said in a statement.

Joining us now is an expert from the USPIE team, here to discuss the finer details behind this matter, and what it means for what children can learn in the future.

Q&A

  1. What do you believe history will take away in Florida’s attempts to teach kids more specific things within their schools?
  2. It seems a bit odd that Critical Race Theory could end up in lessons surrounding a math book. However, there are surprisingly statistics here, with nearly half the books submitted banned. Is this mainly due to what authors believe what they can teach children, or something else?
  3. Should parents be concerned over such censorship of books, with a government basically telling them what their kids can or can’t learn?
  4. How do you think other states will react over Florida’s decision? Do you believe they’ll act with equal measure, or instate their own rules as to what is being taught within their schools?
  5. The board is being awfully quiet about why the books were banned, simply stating general reasons. Wouldn’t specifics break down what they believe are the problem within the books? Or do you think the details are worth covering?

6. Could you please tell us about the new documentary film you are in that covers some of what we discussed today, and where we may watch it or get more information on the film?
Answer: Our website is TruthAndLiesFilm.us. The rilm release is April 29, 2022. Just go to TruthAndLiesFilm.us to learn how to watch it.
